2018 will be the 4th annual Waiouru Discoverer. Each year the event has had steady growth and it has reached the size now where we have brought in some specialist Mountain bike people to organise and refine the event even further. Watch this space for some exciting developments for the 2018 Event.
We would love to have your company in 2018 at the Waiouru Discoverer.
The Waiouru Military Training Area has flora, fauna and geographical features that are totally unique to the area. Its 63,000 hectares.
Stretch 55kms from the Highway one eastwards and from Waiouru town its northern border is approx. 25 Kms away.
In 2018 we hope to be in a new area of the 63,000 hectare training area so we can explore new sights and new challenges. Keep watching for developments. The proposed route is further north than the last three years and will start in Paradise valley. Head to Edinburgh castle, for some really stunning scenery. For the brave they will travel down Bravo 2zero to the Moawhango river before it flows into the lake and then back around the to the Lake outfall for lunch. The ordinary folk will travel from Edinburgh Castle down Lion & King nearly as far as SH1 then back into Paradise and home approx 20Kms. The brave will also travel down Lion & King but they will turn left and head south down and up the Zig zag before heading home to Paradise. Approx (45kms)
The main course will be approx. 45 Kms of some gravel mostly 4×4 tracks. Where we can safely go off the tracks onto good grass surfaces we will
Because of the family theme of our events we encourage camping at Waiouru. Thus for those who would like to there will be camping and hot showers and toilets available on the Waiouru Sports Ground, which is signposted from about 400 metres from the QEII Army museum on SH1.
The trails will be marshaled and we will have recovery units on the trails for those who may need assistance. Our Marshals will have continuous radio contact with Ride Control and other marshals as well as comprehensive first aid coverage.
This is a fun ride it is not organised as a race but of course you may travel at whatever speed you feel comfortable with. All we ask you to do is be courteous and respect other riders. There are no prizes as such other than the breath taking panorama and the brilliant company of your fellow mountain Bikers
The courses will be finalised over Labour Weekend as we will have better idea as to winter impacts on our trails at that point. We will provide detailed information on grades and lengths of options for you.
